Have you ever been asked to do a friend a favor and it turned into something way bigger? About 7 years ago my friend asked me if I would man the slingshot station for Cub Scout Day Camp. She said all I needed was to attend a one day training and show up. Everything would be provided and ready to go. I took the bait, hook, line and sinker.
I showed up and ran the slingshot station. I also got to help out the archery and BB gun stations. It was tons of fun being in the shooting sports. The next year came around and I was asked to run the BB station. The next year I was shooting sports director. The next year it was at my house and has been for the last 4 years. I’ve been Shooting Sports Director, Program Director, Camp Director. Even Camp Director and Program Director all at the same time. Eeek!

My kids love helping with Day Camp.
My favorite stations to hang out are the Shooting Sports of course. We had probably the best District Executive in all of Boy Scouts. He enjoyed Day Camp just as much as the boys. The year our theme was Knight Camp, he jumped in and jousted with the boys. He always challenged me to a shoot out. I would win BB’s he would win Archery. He was a great person to work on Day Camp with. Ok, maybe it was riding around in the golf cart squirting kids, and maybe some innocent grown ups, with water. One year we were sneaking up on one of the leaders, getting ready to squirt her with water. She heard us, turned around and looked at us and bolted through the field. We couldn’t stop laughing. Day Camp is full of some of the funnest memories.

I have been a part of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. They each have their own unique way of teaching skills that kids can use later in life. I have enjoyed both. I was on the Day Camp planning committee for Girl Scouts for about 5 years when my kids were younger. I really enjoy working with so many different talented people that care about kids. This year is probably going to be the last year I host at my house. I don’t charge BSA for using our property. But I do have some future plans for that part of our property.

We get to do some of the coolest stuff! Coming up with the ideas for the stations was always so much fun. The smile on every kids face is the best part of camp. I know these programs make a huge impact on our kids, and I am grateful to be a part of so many opportunities. Maybe I’ll do a segment on some of the cool things we did! Root Beer Floats, s’mores using a solar oven, even a maze through the yard!
